Tax Returns Online
For taxable year 2008, the Department of the Treasury, in collaboration with the
private sector, will provide taxpayers an alternative for the preparation of
the 2008 Individual Income Tax Return through the Internet.
Taxpayers that comply with the following requirements will be able to use
free of charge the application to prepare the Return:

gross income is $75,000 or less;
-
income consist only of salaries and wages subject to withholding in Puerto
Rico, tips, wages from the Federal Government or payments form annuities and
pensions;
-
claims the standard deduction (do not itemize);
-
only claims the Credit for Salaried Taxpayers, the Compensatory Credit for Low
Income Pensioners, the Employment Credit, the Credit for Contributions to the
Educational Foundation for Free Selection of Schools or the credit for the
purchase of Automoviles Propelled by Alternative or Mixed Power;
-
do not claim a deduction for alimony payments;
-
not required to file an Estimated Tax Declaration;
-
do not file under the status of married filing separate returns;
-
is a US citizen or a resident alien, who do not participates in Major League
Baseball Games or U.S National Basketball Association Games celebrated in PR;
and
-
is not subject to the payment of Gradual Adjustment or Alternative Basic Tax.
This application is designed only for the electronic filing of the Return. In
order to electronically file, the taxpayer must have filed (paper or
electronically) a 2007 Return. After finalizing the electronic filing, the
application will generate an Electronic Filing Confirmation that contains,
among other information, the taxpayer’s name, social security number, date and
time of filing and a unique confirmation number. This Confirmation together
with the Return has the same legitimacy (for banking purposes, student’s
financial assistance, municipal license tax or personal property tax return) as
a copy of the Return stamped by the Department of the Treasury in the presence
of the taxpayer.
Remember that the due date for filing the 2008 Return is April
15, 2009. If you need additional time to file it,

Taxpayers who do not qualify to use the free of charge applications will be able
to file electronically through the use of software or applications that have
been certified by the Department. In the alternative, taxpayers may visit the
Tax Returns Preparation and Orientation Centers which will open to the public
on March 24, 2009. We will soon be offering information, publicly and on our
website, regarding the working hours and locations of said Orientation Centers.

agents or employees are not responsible for the use of any of the above
programs or applications, for the accuracy of the forms, calculations or
information submitted to the Department through the same or for any damages
