Tax Returns Online
For taxable year 2007, the Department of the Treasury, in collaboration with the private sector, will provide taxpayers two alternatives for the preparation of the 2006 Individual Income Tax Return through the Internet. The taxpayer has the option to select between an on-line application or to download a program.
Taxpayers that comply with the following requirements will be able to use free of charge any of the applications to prepare the Return:
- gross income is $75,000 or less;
- income consist only of salaries and wages subject to withholding in Puerto Rico, wages from the Federal Government or payments form annuities and pensions;
- claimed the standard deduction (do not itemize);
- only claimed Credit for Salaried Taxpayers, Compensatory Credit for Low Income Pensioners, Credit for Salaried Taxpayers, or Credit for Contributions to the Educational Foundation for Free Selection of Schools;
- do not claim a deduction for alimony payments;
- not required to file an Estimated Tax Declaration;
- do not file under the status of married filing separate returns; and
- must be a US citizen or a resident alien.
These applications are designed only for the electronic filing of the Return. In order to electronically file, the taxpayer must have filed (paper or electronically) a 2006 Return. After finalizing the electronic filing, both applications will generate an Electronic Filing Confirmation that contains, among other information, the taxpayer’s name, social security number, date and time of filing and a unique confirmation number. This Confirmation together with the Return has the same legitimacy (for banking purposes, student’s financial assistance, municipal license tax or personal property tax return) as a copy of the Return stamped by the Department of the Treasury in the presence of the taxpayer.
Remember that the due date for filing the 2007 Return is April 15, 2008. If you need additional time to file it, click here, to obtain the Request for Extension.
If you have questions related with the use of the applications, you will have to contact the support area of the application or program you selected or send us an email to InfoPEL@hacienda.gobierno.pr
For tax related questions, send an email to InfoServ@hacienda.gobierno.pr
Taxpayers who do not qualify to use the free of charge applications will be able to file electronically through the use of software or applications that have been certified by the Department. In the alternative, taxpayers may visit the Tax Returns Preparation and Orientation Centers which will open to the public on March 24, 2008. We will soon be offering information, publicly and on our website, regarding the working hours and locations of said Orientation Centers.
